About
Celebrating our 47th Year Together!!
Miss Melanie, our founder, began her teaching career over 45 years ago as a young teen. She earned recognition in talent competitions as well as college and local Theatre. Being a performer herself, she knew what it took to be successful, and decided to teach others how to make it happen.
In 1980, she decided that a ‘face lift’ was needed in the world of studio dance, that it should be a place where self-esteem and contribution are evaluated above ‘perfect genes’ or a diva mentality. While teaching proper technique and classical skills, Miss Melanie has cultivated a core group of excellent, well-trained and Innovative Instructors who share her philosophy and bring excitement to the dance floor every week.
Our Mission
We are committed to providing each individual the opportunity to learn the art of dance in a positive, structured, and inspiring environment. Our teachers have a rare combination of professional performing careers and college educations in dance that bring our classes to life!
Our studios offer individual attention, and respect towards each student. Our focus is on proper use of the body ,while developing artistry and self-expression within each dancer. We believe in an open forum for our team of teachers to communicate on the progress of our students, and are proud of our parent/teacher communication throughout the program. The parents in our program are what really make it thrive, as they are involved, informed and often get to take part in classes alongside their students to learn routines and techniques to rehearse at-home.
We are dedicated to being a part of our community by encouraging communication through art and performance. Whichever end of the spectrum, whether a beginning dancer, or a top-level competitor, each will get the same attention and guidance from us. We create Dancers!
Community Involvement
MDU has been a part of the Seattle Community for over 45 years, performing at Seafair events, the Bite of Seattle, the Washington State (Puyallup) Fair, Whirligig, Winterfest, The Normandy Park Arts Festival, Normandy Park 4th of July community Parade, Burien Strawberry Festival, Burien Little Theatre, Burien 4th of July Parade, Des Moines Waterland Parade, Des Moines Saturday Market, Highline School District’s Back to School Fairs, Retirement Homes, and local elementary school assemblies all over the City.
We strive to have our dancers give back to the community– our students lead by example ~ we could not be MORE proud! They set an example of service and commitment to the community by giving of their time and talents throughout the year
